He got up and wrapped his arms around her and kissed her cheek. "It's okay, Nana," he whispered. "It's okay to cry."

She nodded, burying her face in her hands and sobbing into them. She took note of her son's comfort, impressed despite herself.

He buired his head in her shoulder and cried gently. "Was it a boy?" he whispered.

She nodded, reaching up to stroke his hair, offering what comfort she could. "Yes, a boy," she confirmed.

He sighed, and wiped his own tears away. "I was going to have a normal cousin?" he asked and looked down and covered his eyes.

She nodded, tears flowing again. "Yes," she said. "Although Naru is normal enough. You have to admit, Agalos, he's doing pretty good for being half-orc! Most people would have expected him to try and conquer Rivendell by now! But he shows no inclination to do so -- quite the opposite, he hates violence." She sighed, thinking of the bloody bundle that should have been a child. "I wish all Elves shared his ideals."

He shook his head. "But... I wanted..." he closed his eyes and held his mother closly. "I just don't like him."

His mother nodded. "I know," she said. "I know, dear. But, honestly, if you gave him a chance, I think you would."

"But... but I've tried. And Laur yells at me all the time about it, but ... I just don't. Ada says its alright as long as I'm polite."

She sighed. "It's fine," she said. "It will come in time, I suppose." She hugged him close. His protestings had brought a pleasant relief from her grief, but now it came back. She didn't want to admit it, but she was worried. Very worried. That poison had been meant for her, she was positive of that. What if the murderer came back, seeing his first plan had been foiled?

"Nana," he whsiepred and looked at her. "Was... was that wine meant for you too? She drank it here right?"

She looked at her son, alarmed, then decided to be completely honest. "No, my son," she said. "It was all meant for me." She put a hand on his shoulder. "Tell your sister nothing of this."

He blinked and looked at her. "I won't tell... she's my big sister, but I'll keep her safe."

She nodded. "I just . . . I just worry," she said. "Who would do such a thing? And why? And what if . . . what if they want to finish the job?" She realized belatedly she probably shouldn't have confided in her son. He was too young!

He blinked and looked at her. "I won't let anything happen. Nana," he whispered and held her close. "I promise. Nor will Ada... we'll take care of you and Laur."
